Getting ready for the trip to Florida
Unlike Alan who loves to pack the night before a trip, I prefer getting things together little by little — assembling the things I would tend to forget if done at the spur of the moment — like the postcards I will mail home.
I have been able to acquire quite a collection of Disneyana as the collectors refer to it — so I have a stash of postcards to send from Orlando, add to that the postcards of Florida which I had bought in the previous trips Alan and I have taken before Angel came into our lives. As a postcard collector, I have found it a good way to chronicle our trip by sending postcards back home. Before Angel came, I addressed it to myself with annotations about what Alan and I did. If Alan went on a business trip without me, he would write me about how he wished I was there.
Since Angel arrived, our postcards have been addressed to him — as I am hopeful that one day, he will find inspiration and fond memories in the postcards that we will have amassed in our travel collection through the years. (I now have around 50 postcards in that collection…) I remind him about what we did with him or where we went, and during those vacations where it was only Alan and I (like Paris), we tell him about the places we visited. Perhaps one day, he will find himself there, and he will remember how Mommy and Daddy had written about this or that place.
I bought my stamps already and have even addressed the postcards.. the only thing left is to write the dedication. I usually pause a while in the park to write — then we find a postal box before we leave the state we’re in. That way, it’s postmarked accordingly.
Lugging a toddler along means extra supplies of medicines and the usual first aid kit. It also means bringing along enough snacks for “baon” — I’m even bringing instant oatmeal besides the usual cheerios and fish crackers. Tomorrow I am going to start packing our clothes because Alan and I might end up going out Friday night with one of his close friends from high school who is here in New York for a vacation with his family. We have our directions printed out. (I’m the designated navigator.)
I’m actually excited twice over because it’s Angel’s first time at Disneyworld, and more importantly, Mom gets to see Mickey Mouse finally. Both are equally priceless, but I know this isn’t going to be Angel’s last time there, and I don’t know when Mom can come back. Disney, here we come!!
