Ako si Superman!

The younger ones will probably not know of this Rey Valera ditty he entitled “Ako si Superman” (pag kasama kita). Now I’m second guessing myself if I’m not remembering it right. But it was a song, and yes it was by Rey Valera. As Meatloaf sang, “(T)wo out of three ain’t bad.”

This year, the little boy is Superman, thanks to one of Alan’s cousins who gave the costume as a birthday present in Manila for his second birthday. They had the good sense to get him one that was 2 sizes bigger so it didn’t quite fit him right until THIS halloween.

I tried to take a picture of him after I got him all dressed up this morning but he’s learned how to clown around and avoid getting his photo taken. As a result, I don’t think I have any decent picture of my superman. It gets more exciting as he grows bigger… Precious memories that are beyond words.

Only Child

I don’t know how it is to grow up an only child because I grew up as the eldest of a brood of 3 which eventually became 4 as I turned 18. But I am raising an only child.

I’m writing this blogpost while trying to keep an eye on Angel in a mall play area. He has been trailing a months-old baby girl twaddling about with her Dad tailing her. He seems so enamored by the little girl that not even a warning from me that her Dad might not like him hovering over the little girl would make him leave the girl alone. I can’t help but wonder how he would be with a sibling. Then again I have to remind myself I am now 41 and the economic reality of it is that I don’t think we would be able to raise a household with two children as comfortably as we have with just one.

I am only too well aware that my boy is obviously starved for playmates, a craving which I am hoping his being in pre-school has helped stave off. I am trying very hard to provide him with the social skills to help him get past the lack of siblings to interact with. He’s doing alright so far. He’s left the little girl alone and is back to climbing and sliding — that’s my little boy..

Watching a Movie with a 3-year-old

There are times when it’s easier than others. We often try to bank on him drifting off to sleep and there were times we got what we wished for. More often than not, though, one of us ended up leaving the moviehouse in the middle of the show. It has actually been more convenient when Angel and I opted instead to stay at the play area instead of catching the movie with Alan. We try.. It’s one of the sacrifices of parenting — one that we’ve learned to accept. The trade off is certainly worth it.
